We have just completed our 16th
Nullarbor crossing and thought an update on
diesel prices would interest some members. If you schedule your fuel stops carefully you can save a lot of $$ - some of the price variances are incomprehensible eg Border Village 26 cents a litre more than Eucla :-
Ceduna $1.335 / litre (There is a
Shell / Coles outlet here where you can use a 4 cent off voucher – last chance before the
Nullarbor)
Penong $1.365 / litre
Nundroo $1.369 / litre
Nullarbor $1.725 / litre
Border Village $1.731 / litre (This is only 10 km from Eucla and the fuel price here was 26 cents a litre dearer than Eucla !!!)
Eucla $1.479 / litre
Mundrabilla $1.479 / litre
Madura $1.753 / litre
Cocklebiddy $1.778 / litre
Caiguna $1.768 / litre
Balladonia $1.691 / litre
Norseman $1.439 / litre

After
Norseman, we took the road direct to
Hyden which involves approx 250 kms of dirt road but it's in very good condition as a couple of new mines have opened up in this area and the shire has had to upgrade the road. We cruised at 90 - 100 km most of the way in our Nissan Patrol with a slide on Sunray camper. It saves approx 90 km if heading to
Perth and a lot nicer drive with vey little traffic compare to the normal Great Eastern Hwy route. Lots of
wildflowers out at present but they will be gone by end of Oct I reckon

The
Hyden-
Norseman is a nice drive, but beware of occasional mining co road trains who know that they own this road.
Well signed tourist trail with interesting features and rocks. Top camping spot at
The Breakaways - call in if you go this way even if not camping (see picture in my gallery).

Yep, The
Caltex at
Penong is our favourite - the big trucks use it, which is a good sign - huge tanks and big turnover. Its usually the same price as
Ceduna.

Unfortunately that is the effect of the "Border Village Cartel".
All the $1.7x odd prices are set by the one company which has the management contracts on all of those stations (separately owned locations, but all run by one company). The company is the Border Village Company and you can see their management trawling up and down the highway in matching pootrols.
They are vultures preying on the unsuspecting, wreaking their trail of extortion and unscrupulous racketeering on your regular travellers minding their own business.
They similarly extort for their "accommodation" for what it is worth, and provide no additional
services and barely any products - not even a spare fuse or light globe in many of them.
Interestingly
Mundrabilla and
Eucla (and
Norseman,
Nundroo and
Penong) are independently owned.
May I strongly invite you all to join my boycott of the Border Village and instead support good natured, friendly business people who understand service and are reasonable about their profit expectations like Bruce Mulroy at
Mundrabilla.
Plan on staying at
Eucla too - not only is their accommodation better, in my view, they are nice people to boot.
Cheers

Yeah,
Mundrabilla have been "discounting" for a long time - at least 10 years that I can remember. And theres a lady there that puts great
home made stuff on the menu - her cottage pie was brilliant!

Yep - know exactly what you mean. I was just talking to Ric Brown of OOT 4WD who have release their 166 litre Longranger tank for the new 76 Series V8 Wagon to replace the pathetic 90 litres it comes with, and I said to him that he should sell it as a sensible way for folks to reduce their fuel costs as
well as increase their range to something reasonable.
God knows what Tojo were thinking except mindless penny-pinching.

You have to stop at the
Penong hotel. Best rump steaks with mushy sauce for under $14(and its
home kill). Thats one of the best parts of the trip I reckon. And the
Penong caravan park is good, nice and clean. They also permit dogs.

Agreed. We are heading over to Tassie for Christmas. We were expecting huge prices, but they are quiet cheap in a " middle of no where" circumstance.
I have also heard that one of the mines is opening the mess for travellers, all you can eat buffet for not that much.
It is only about 8 weeks before we leave, and we will be in Tassie for 21 December for three weeks, before taking the long way
home.

Well the
Nullarbor is not actually that long or that remote by comparison to the far northwest, for one thing, and it is a lovely sealed road all the way that can be serviced by triples.
Some of the
places up North are serviced by single trailer arrangements, or barges which are somewhat more expensive... and seasonality means that they have to pay the rent and the power during wet seasons with little or no custom, and might even need to store fuel for the start of the dry for the whole wet season tying up their capital.
In short,
Nullarbor is no longer middle of nowhere, and the difference in price between two outlets just 120km apart, or less if you compare
Eucla to Border Village, is entirely unjustifiable.
Don't do it - don't buy fuel from BV outlets and tell your friends that
Norseman,
Mundrabilla,
Eucla,
Penong etc. are the good guys.
